Welcome to Lofish's Audition FAQs Page!

Audition Season, as we like to call it here at Lofish, can be a super stressful time. But it doesn't have to be! Knowing what and how the recording process works will take some of that stress off your shoulders. Let us give you some tips on how to prepare before you walk into the studio and the clock starts running. THE SET UP ~ Set up time is in fact part of the time you book. This means if you are auditioning with, for example, a jazz trio, your engineer has to set up mikes on every instrument. This could include: drums, upright bass, piano etc. Along with miking up the instruments, there's setting up headphones and getting the right recording levels on the engineer's end. So keep in mind that this process alone can take up to an hour. Plan accordingly!

PRO TOOLS ~ The program we record to is Pro Tools. In order to take the music that we have recorded out of this program and convert it into something you can listen to on your phone/CD player/ipod, or as Pro Tools likes to call it "bouncing a file," we will need additional time at the end of the session to do so. Please make sure to leave enough time for this at the end of your session! Pro Tools "bounces" in Real Time, meaning, if you have 20 minutes of music it will take 20 minutes for Pro Tools to convert it. If you want to leave the studio with all your session files, please bring along an external harddrive or flashdrive. You can also purchase a 16gig flashdrive at the studio.

VIDEO RECORDING ~ It will generally take about 30 minutes to set up the camera, frame the shot, and adjust the lighting. Please note that video set-up time is part of your session time.

VIDEO EDITING ~ As for the video, video sessions need extra editing time. Between synching the audio to the video, transferring and converting files, this process does take time. We can only work as fast as our computers will let us! You need to book your video recording session a minimum of three days ahead of your deadline, as we get very busy during audition season and need that time to process and convert the files into the format you need. Please don't wait until the last minute to book this!

SUBMITTING YOUR AUDITION FILE ~ The college audition process has been changing dramatically over the last six months. More and more colleges request an online submission, including uploading your video file to a server. Please make sure to get a clear picture of the sumbission requirements before you book a session with us, so that we can provide the service you need. You will need to find out what format the file needs to be in, how long it needs do be, and any other specifics the college you are submitting to provides. We do not offer an upload service and are not responsible for getting your file to the various colleges you submit to. Know what, how and when you will need to submit BEFORE you come into the studio.

We hope this helps answer most of the questions you may have along this amazing journey. During audition season, we get booked up very quickly. Plan accordingly and book your session(s) early, and you'll have a much smoother ride. Good luck with your audition!
